UP TO 100 calf coats will be given away free to farmers at the Highland Show, as part of a trial by British manufacturer Equafleece.
The company has invited farms and rearing units to come forward to accept a free calf coat, which will them to assess whether the financial rewards outweigh the initial outlay. Trials at Harper Adams University have revealed positive evidence of the benefits of a coat to a new-born calf, including improved rumen development, better coats, reduced faecal score and a reduced incidence of scours.
Another study on calves wearing coats during their first 118 days averaged 16kgs more in weight gain than an un-coated control group.
Equafleece can be found at Stand 360 on the Ingliston Showground's 2nd Avenue.
