COMBINING the Pearl Winter Barley at Spittal On Rule farm, near Denholm, started on the glorious heatwave Tuesday of this week, with the grain coming off the combine at 16.5%-18%. David Reddihough?'s farm manager, Alistair Mcaulay, who has been driving the combine on the 1000 acre farm for 40 years, has never seen that work start so early, as they normally aim for the Kelso show weekend. But as the rain was bouncing off the tarmac juts a day later, David reckons that the combine will be sitting still for a week or so. Nice to get started though.
