MILK production on Bute is still on First Milk’s radar, despite the fact that 11 of the island’s producers want to jump ship and head for pastures new – probably Yew Tree.

Last week’s poll in The Scottish Farmer prompted a 97% vote in favour of the co-op’s producers on Bute being allowed an early release from their supply contracts.

First Milk’s communications director Paul Flanagan said: "Our chief executive Mike Gallacher offered to go to Bute and speak to the producers but they were unable to meet the dates offered.

“He is keen to meet and discuss the situation and we are trying to get another date suitable for both parties. Mr Gallacher is currently on a producer tour at various venues in our milk field, starting last week in Campbeltown.”

Local co-op member Robert Millar said: “Mr Gallacher told us everything is going in the right direction and prices definitely heading up. We all hope he is right, but we have heard this before."
