CROFTERS are being urged to play their part in helping to secure the future of crofting by taking part in the upcoming Crofting Commission elections which will be finalised on March 27, 2017.
Current convener, Colin Kennedy, has told The Scottish Farmer he will be standing for re-election.
Mr Kennedy said: “At this moment in time I don’t know who my opponents will be and things will become clearer following the roadshows. But my name will be going forward.”
Crofting roadshows about the elections, the role of the commission and commissioners and the importance of making your voice heard, will start at the end of this month.
The roadshows are being held by the commission along with Registers of Scotland, Scottish Crofting Federation, SAC Consulting and NFU Scotland.
The aim is to provide crofters with an opportunity to find out more about the elections and a one-stop shop to discuss crofting issues.
The meetings are open for anyone to attend and will consist of a short talk on the elections and key crofting issues. They will end with a question and answer session where the public can put questions to the organisations present.
All the meetings start at 7.30 –9pm, with the first at the Caladh Inn, Stornoway, on October 26; followed by Dark Island Hotel, Benbecula, October 27; Ayre Hotel, Kirkwall, November 2; Shetland Hotel, Lerwick, November 3; Community Hall, Bonar Bridge, November 10; Falls of Lora Hotel, Oban, November 16; Newtonmore Village Hall, November 17; Gairloch Community Hall, Gairloch, November 23; Weigh Inn, Thurso, November 23; Skeabost Hotel, Skye, November 24.
