LAND managers on Skye have a chance to judge the effectiveness of a new, remotely controlled rush and bush cutter at a free field drainage and grassland management event being held at Scuddaburgh in Uig this Saturday, October 29.

The meeting is one of the first organised under the Scottish Government’s newly launched Farm Advisory Service, delivered by SAC Consulting. Various methods of rush control will be examined, including a newly arrived McConnel Robocut, operated by local contractor Groundclear. This remotely controlled machine can work on slopes up to 55 degrees and clear grass or bracken, rushes, gorse and small trees.

“We hope those attending will enjoy comparing the various methods of rush control from hi-tech to more conventional,” explained Portree-based Janette Sutherland of SAC Consulting. “There will also be expert discussions on improving grassland management for both production and biodiversity. We hope this demonstration offers some options for those faced with what can be difficult and costly choices.”

Those wishing to attend should register by contacting the FAS Advice-line on 0300 323 0161 or via the FAS website (https://www.fas.scot/events/event/don’t-throw-money-drain/)
