A MEAT processing plant in Greenock caught fire this week, with the blaze breaking out at the McKechnie Jess plant, on Port Glasgow Road, Greenock.

The fire occurred on Wednesday, March 8, around 3:20am, leading to traffic delays on the adjacent A8.

Around 30 firefighters and six appliances were sent to the factory, where the roof as found to have collapsed. A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that there were no casualties.

In an unfortunate turn of events, this is not the first time McKechnie Jess has been affected by a fire, with another of their premises, an abattoir in Brechin, having caught fire previously.

A report from the time stated that staff had to be evacuated from the Matheson Jess (as the company was known then) unit at the Brechin abattoir, but that no injuries were reported, and that the fire started in a 26ft by 6ft container of animal fat.
