Carlisle
A LARGE entry for the time of year of 402 store cattle met a strong trade at Harrison and Hetherington’s Carlisle centre, where a Limousin cross bullock from JW Slack and Sons, Newby, Carlisle, topped at £1435.
Heifers reached £1305 for Limousins from Messrs Baxter, Eden Bank, Carlisle. 
A large show of 270 weaned cattle hit a top of £1165 for a British Blue cross bullock from Messrs Mundell, Victoria House, Lockerbie, with bulls to £1140 for a Limmy cross from P and E Harrison, Midtown, Wigton, and heifers to £1130 for a Blue cross from Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill, Thursby. 
A couple days later the firm held a sale of beef breeding cattle where a run of Limousin heifers and calves from Messrs Betts, Bridge Farm, topped at £2600. 
The entry of Limousin cows and calves from Messrs Baillie, Castairs Mains, peaked at £2450.
A Limmy cross from Messrs Thomlinson, Powe Croft, topped the in-calf heifers at £1520, and bulling heifers reached £1400 twice for Limousin crosses from Messrs Muir, Middle Farm.

CATTLE from Ross Farms led most sections of United Auctions’ store sale, where 253 bullocks levelled at 237.84p per kg and 179 heifers averaged 287.4p. 
The Ross Farms Charolais crosses reached 287.4p for a 414kg heifer; £1550 for a 632kg bullock; and £1370 for a 550kg heifer. Otherwise, a 327kg Limousin cross bullock from West Park sold for 278.3p. 
The 62 dairy bullocks averaged 165.72p, having peaked at 191p and £1100 for Friesian crosses from Benston. 
Cast cows (96) sold to 207.3p for a Charolais cross from Teasses and £1790 for another from Woodhead of Mailer. They averaged 146.92p while 28 dairy cows averaged 104.6p and sold to 128.3p and £1150 for Holsteins off Woodend.

Overall, bullocks averaged 242.3p or £1056.48 and heifers levelled at 233.85p or £948.25.
Breeding cattle reached £680 for Highland cows with calves from Craigsford.

A trio of 330kg Limousin crosses from Kintradwell, Brora, topped heifers at 248.5p with a 556kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Lower Hobbister, Stenness, at £1230. 
Young bulls (nine) hit 218.1p for a 298kg Limousin from Cullisse and £1280 for a 620kg Charolais from Upper Forgie, Keith.

A plainer show of cast cow saw meaty types continue a good trade as the sale averaged 124p per kg. Cows reached 174.5p for a Limousin from B and SE Carter, Ellel, with dairy cows to 149.5p from D Fox and Co, Lancaster.

Leading the entry at £1255 were Limousin bullocks from High Auchneel, with Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Fardingjames hitting 253.2p per kg. The 53 bullocks averaged 224.5p. 
Heifers (48) levelled at 225p, having sold to £1110 for Limousins from Newmains and British Blues from High Auchneel, with Limmies from Newmains also making 244.8p. 
A small show of breeding cattle sold to £1650 for a Limousin heifer with calf from Porterstown, with bulling heifers to £1150 for Limousins from High Auchneel.

LIMOUSINS led most sections of Caledonian Marts’ sale of 158 store cattle at Stirling. 
They reached 282p per kg for heifers from Graystale, Stirling; 276p for bullocks from Spouthead, Milton of Campsie; and £1230 for a bullock from Ardgate, Gartocharn. 
Heifers also sold to £1180 for Simmentals from East Kerse, Lochwinnoch, and averaged 240p while bullocks levelled at 250p. 
Dairy-bred bullocks averaged 156p, having peaked at 171p from Lawhill Cottages, Torrance, and £670 from Wester Whitefield, Dunfermline.

Quoybrae
A GOOD show of cattle met a fast-selling trade and store averages were well up on the year when Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 538 store and breeding cattle. 
A pre-sale show of stores was judged by Bruce and Sophie Watt, Cairntaick, who picked out a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Swanson, Quarryside, Castletown, as their champion. This stot weighed in at 448kg and later sold to G and D Cowie, Cairnton, for £1320. 
In reserve was a 619kg Limmy cross bullock from DA Budge, Brae-edge, which went on to realise £1480 when knocked down to D and V Buchan, Savoch. 
Topping the trade at £1560 however, was a 725kg Charolais cross bullock from Brae-edge, with bullocks also hitting 290.5p per kg for a 451kg Limmy cross from North Lyth, Lyth. 
Heifers reached £1320 for a 478kg Limmy cross from Norland, Lybster (De Paola), and 280.3p for a 314kg Blonde cross from Bardnaclavan, Bridge of Westfield. 
Overall, the 267 bullocks were up 16.9p on the year to average 244.3p, with heifers up 16.2p to average 235.3p for 245. 
Breeding cattle (26) peaked at £2350 for a Charolais cross with Charolais-sired heifer calf from Tacher, Latherton, and the first part of the dispersal from H Harper, Upper Dounreay, peaked at £2000 for a cow and calf.

STORE and breeding cattle met a flying trade at Darlington Auction Mart, where a show of 36 cows and calves from the second part dispersal from High Hedley Hope Farms, Tow Law, peaked at £2050 for a seven-year-old British Blue cow with Limousin-sired bull calf at foot. 
The entry of more than 200 store cattle reached £1325 for heifers from D and M Lowes, with bulls to £1175 from K and J Stables and bullocks to £1165 from D Barron. 
Cast cows (85) sold to 177p per kg for a Limousin cow from N White, Barf House, and £1252 for one from WM Reed and Sons.
