Lockerbie
A STRONG demand for store cattle through Harrison and Hetherington's sale saw Limousins from Messrs Bell, Haas Grove, top the trade throughout. 
They reached £1200 and 304.5p per kg for bullocks while heifers sold to £1080 and 289.5p.

Carlisle
WITH new buyers present and a strong demand for every class of cattle, Harrison and Hetherington had one of the busiest mid-summer sales for some time. 
The entry of 435 store cattle peaked at £1390 for British Blue bullocks from Messrs Beaty, Durdar, Carlisle, while heifers reached £1350 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Jefferson, Aspatria Hall, Wigton. 
Dairy cattle hit £1090 from Whinney Hill. 
A good show of 231 weanlings peaked at £1275 for Blonde heifers from Moor Park, with bulls to £1260 for a Limousin bull from Niven Hill, and bullocks to £1140 for Limousins from Crookholm.
On Monday, a larger show of store lambs met a wide-spread demand to top at £78 for a pen of Texel crosses from Messrs Robson, Taylor Burn.

Stirling (UA)
LIMOUSIN crosses led the price per kg section at United Auctions’ sale of 842 store cattle, when bullocks weighing 257kg from Coalheughglen peaked at 295.7p per kg and heifers reached 275.6p for a 254kg pen from Gateside. 
Crookedstonemuir topped the gross trade at £1400 with Aberdeen-Angus cross bullocks weighing 597kg, and heifers reached £1350 for a 690kg Simmental cross from Hillside. 
The 571 bullocks levelled at 232.26p while 170 heifers cashed in at 230.95p.
Averaging 175.07p, the 87 dairy bullocks sold to 204p for a 228kg Holstein cross from Knollhead and £950 for a 514kg Friesian cross from Nether Enoch. 
Young bulls (14) hit tops of 245p for a Limousin cross from Welton of Creuchies and £1450 for a Simmental cross from Woodhall. They averaged 217.51p.
Cattle from Newhouse of Glamis led the cast cow trade at 217.2p for a Limousin cross and £1730 for a Charolais cross. The 132 beef cows levelled at 139.82p, with 35 dairy cows at 109.73p having peaked at 141.9p for a Holstein from Kinnermit and £1130 for a Friesian from Bandirran.
On Monday, the firm sold 4967 store lambs and feeding sheep at its opening sale, where most lamb sections cashed in at values above last year’s levels – Suffolk cross, £64.83 (+£5.29 on the year); Texel cross, £63.21 (+£3.76); Beltex cross, £61.68 (+£6.59); Cheviot, £55.07; Mule, £55.18 (-56p); Blackface £37.50 (-£2.15). 
Texel crosses from Ashintully topped the sale at £85 per head.

Thainstone
STORE cattle met a similar trade on the week when Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 127 to a top of 259.8p per kg for a pen of three Charolais cross bullocks weighing 410kg from Backmuir, Keith. 
Bullocks (54) levelled at 233.7p (+4.4p on the week) and also sold to £1270 for a pair of 542kg Charolais crosses from Bishopton, Kinellar. 
The 37 heifers averaged 222.5p having peaked at 250p for a 240kg Charolais from Ballaterach, Dinnet, and £1350 for a 654kg Shorthorn from Beafield, Sanday.
Also on offer were 982 sheep which saw store lambs (198) keenly bid for and short of buyers’ requirements when they were topped at £75 for a pen of Leicesters from Skelbister, Stromness. 
Jacobs from Serrigar, Colpy, secured the lead amongst the five breeding ewes at £72 and a pen of pure Beltex from Mains of Culsh, New Deer, topped the 779 feeding sheep at £130.

Ayr
A MIXED show continued to sell well at Craig Wilson’s sale of 373 store cattle, where 160 bullocks averaged 288.6p per kg or £898.88, 67 Friesian bullocks averaged 158p or £756.72 and 146 heifers levelled at 221p. 
The sale reached £1320 for a Hereford bullock from Benston and 277.2p for Limousin bullocks from Knockeen. Heifers reached £1240 for a pen of Limousins from Daljeburgh and 246.6p for another from Broadshean. 
Dairy bullocks hit £890 for a pen of six from Turnerhill and 174.2p for a pen from Watston. 
On Tuesday, the firm sold 52 breeding cattle where quality types were in big demand and plainer sorts were harder to cash. 
The 29 heifers with calves levelled at £1735 having topped the sale at £2450 for a Limousin with bull calf from Pennymore, while cows with calves reached £2000 for a British Blue and heifer calf from Barneil (Girvan) and averaged £1338 for nine. 
A small show of eight dairy cattle averaged £1578 and peaked at £1850 for a heifer from J Kennedy and Son, Perryston.

Darlington
A TWO-TIERED trade was evident at the opening sale of breeding sheep at Darlington Farmers’ Auction Mart, where buyers were willing to pay for size and quality while the smaller end of the gimmer section was harder to cash. 
The 588-strong entry saw gimmers level at £142, an increase of £7 on the year. They peaked at £200 for the champion group from the pre-sale show, a pen of 10 Texels from Robert Skelton, New Hall, which sold to the judges, David and Christopher Patterson, Whitehouse. 
New Hall sold further pens at £200 and £190 twice. 
A large entry of 1236 store lambs averaged £58.20 (-£1.70 on the year), but contained many smaller lambs and, on the whole, vendors recorded slightly improved returns in comparison to last year. 
Texels from GH Lister, Holebeck House, topped the entry at £78. 
Cast cows (65) sold to 177p for a Limousin from C Gregg, Angram Cote, and £1316 for another from WI Suddes and Son, South Farm. 
The on-going dispersal of the High Hedley Hope herd continued and was topped at £2200 for a British Blue cow with bull calf at foot. 
Among the store cattle, 82 bullocks reached £1270 for a Limousin from GH Watson and Son, Home Farm, while 69 heifers sold to £1090 from L Booton, Manor Farm, and 41 young bulls hit £1255 for a Limousin from C Robinson, South View.

STORE cattle met a strong demand despite being of mixed quality at Wallets Marts’ sale of 102 on Monday. 
They reached £1355 and 245.5p per kg for a pen of Limousin bullocks from AJ Sharp and Son, Barscarrow, while heifers sold to £1080 for Charolais from High Glenjorrie and 242.7p for a pen of six Charolais from Lochside Ltd. 
Averages levelled at 218.75p or £1032.09 for bullocks and 221.52p or £885 for heifers.
Cast cattle sold to £1519 for a Charolais bull from Kenmure, with cows to 191p and £1399 for a Simmental cross from Culnaightrie. The 34 cows cashed in to average 144.47p or £923.75.
