THE LIMOUSIN breed not only brought its National Grand Prix show to Dumfries – the section winner also went on to be crowned the show’s overall beef champion.

While an entry of 42 for the breed might have been a bit disappointing, there was no doubting the quality on parade. Douglas and Lynda Graham’s Wilodge Fastrac daughter, Burnbank JoJo, has had a fantastic season so far, with her Dumfries win topping up the kist with even more rosettes.

For the inter-breed cattle title she was in front of the prime cattle champion, Andrew Ewing jnr’s Lakeland Lady, a black Limousin cross heifer which he’d bought for £3000 after he placed her top at a sale in Cockermouth.

Dumfries is rightly famed for its big show of sheep and this year, dodging between the showers, the inter-breed honours went the way of the Bluefaced Leicester – which was a traditional type three-shear ram shown by Peter Brown, while mother Betty looked on and father Drew was back home at Drumphumphry, Corsock.

The overall was a Rossiebank-bred sheep which had been bought at Carlisle for £520 and is by a Mendick sire

Judge Willie Thomson, said of the champion: “It’s a helluva powerful sheep,” before handing the reserve rosette to the Texel leader, a gimmer shown by Brian MacTaggart for Douganhill Farms, Castle Douglas.

She was got by AI via Sportsmans Tremendous and out of a ewe by Hullhouse Special Brew.

The overall leader in the dairy show was the Holstein leader, Brian Yates’ well-known show cow, Logan Sid Edie. This fourth calver was taking her third championship at Dumfries in succession.

The Lindsays, from Harperfield, had both the champion and reserve Ayrshires, leading with the second calver, Willowfield Winnie 2, which was fresh from a champion of champions win at East Kilbride.

The big entry of goats at the show was kept under canvas, which proved a boon for sheep exhibitors and spectators when some of the infrequent, but heavy showers interrupted ‘play’.

The well-known show team from Southwaite-based Mrs Elaine Woodmass was well to the fore, with her multi-show-winning British Toggenburg, Aphrodite Shannyn, a three-year-old by Aphrodite Samar, in the money.

Top in the Clydesdale section was the three-year-old yeld mare, Rashillhouse Jessica Jean from Mrs Colleen Marshall, from Whithorn. Again a multi-prize-winner, she’s a daughter of Rashillhouse Winston
