It was a sad day for all concerned when the longest established pedigree Ayrshire herd in the UK – which dates back to the start of the 20th century – was sold at Borderway Mart, Carlisle and prices peaked at 2750gns.
The sale from Robert Stevenson, which following the ‘Monthly Dairy Day’ sale, included animals from all the top Changue families, including the Celandine, Melanie, Petula and some prolific Holstein families.
Topping the trade was Changue Melanie 224, a Changue Stadium daughter that sold dry and due with her second in October. Potentially an eighth generation Ex or VG, she was knocked down to J and Millar, Craigends, Airdrie, Lanarkshire.
The similarly aged Changue Honeysuckle 17 sold for 1700gns to A Wardrop and Sons, Fore Rogerton, Auchinleck. She is by Changue Cadell and also sold due in October with her second.
The Holstein section was topped by an Ex-rated cow from the Lola family which made 1800gns to K Brough and Son, Bolton Cottage, Wigton.
This was Chaguefarm Sally Lola, by Gen-I-beq Salto, which sold freshly claved in her fourth.
The fresh second calver, Changuefarm Leif Fantasy, by Leif, then made 1750gns to Hendrie Bros, Galston.
The monthly sale peaked at £2200 for a fresh third calver from the Nanson family, Sorrow Stones, Holmrook, purchased by H and EM Hunter and Son, Berrier Head, Penrith. The same home also took £2080 for a milky second calver, from MG and S Harper, West House, Dearham, Maryport.
