Dingwall
TRADE reflected current challenges in the sector when Dingwall and Highland Marts sold 1515 weaned calves at the second district show and sale, where Tom Henderson, of Udale, was judging.
It was the champion, an eight-month-old Limousin heifer weighing 455kg from J Smith, The Rowans, Brora, which sold for the top price of £1500 while the reserve, a 320kg six-month-old Limmy cross bullock from Dunmaglass Estate, Dores, made £1450 or 453.1p per kg.
Bullocks (806) averaged 236.9p while heifers (635) levelled at 226.4p and also sold to 473.7p for a 282kg British Blue cross from Invercharron, Ardgay.

A SPECIAL entry of calves from Shetland, the West Highlands and the Isle of Lewis was forward at Aberdeen and Northern Marts, where the champion went on to top at £940.
That was a 346kg bullock from LJM and JIM Wishart, Bakkanlee, Whitesness, which sold to judges John and Neil Eddie, Hallhill, Kinneff. That stot was also the best calf from Shetland, while the best West Highland calf was a 280kg Limousin from C Morrison, Lasgair, Lower Barvas, which also sold to Messrs Eddie, this time for £820.
Averages were up on the year as 94 bullocks levelled at 264.3p (+16.1p) while 95 heifers averaged 238.9p (+19.2p) and sold to £690 for a pair of 266kg Charolais crosses from Barvas, Glebe.

Fort William
CALVES and store cattle met a good trade for most classes at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale of 259 alongside 24 OTM cattle last week.
Simmental crosses from Moy Farm, Banavie, led the price per kg at 360p for a pair of 125kg heifers and 286.3p for a pen of 255kg bullocks, while more of the same from 7 Back of Keppoch, Arisaig, topped the gross trade at £980 for a 450kg heifer and £940 for a 490kg bullock.
Bullocks (183) averaged 221.4p and heifers (76) levelled at 214.4p.
A Limousin cow with male calf at foot from Insh, Spean Bridge, topped the eight breeding cattle at £920, and cast cows sold to 142.4p for a Limousin cross from Market Stance, Fort Augustus, and £1070 for an Angus cross from Toriri, Corpach.

Dalmally
A GOOD show of mainly hill-type, spring-born calves was presented to a packed ringside of buyers at United Auctions, where a total of 1230 calves were sold.
Averages were back on the year when bullocks averaged £628.50 (-£9.90) or 235.45p per kg (-3.8p) while heifers levelled at £535.79 (-£30.40) or 217.44p (-4.62p).  
The champion, as picked out by Allan Hall, Knockeen, was a spring-born heifer from Messrs McVicar, Lephinchapel, which weighed 308kg and went on to sell for £960 or 312p per kg. The reserve, a 462kg autumn-born Limousin bullock from M Hall, Tombuie, realised £1180 to top the sale.
Charolais cross bullocks from Tullochmhor topped the price per kg at 318p, while heifers also sold to £970 for Charolais from Bragleenmore.

BOTH autumn-born and spring-born calves were easily sold at Craig Wilson, but younger and smaller calves proved more difficult.
The sale reached £1260 for a pen of yearling Limousin cross bullocks from J Wallace, Claycrop, with native bullocks to £1260 for a pure Galloway from Peter Hunter Blair, Nether Cleugh. Per kg, bullocks reached 287.3p for a spring-born Charolais cross from Messrs Lochart, Culdoach.
Heifers reached £1250 for a pair of Limousins from Messrs Hannah, Meoul, with a pen of 10 spring-born Salers from Messrs Howatson, Risk, at 434p.
Averages were mixed on the year as 1040 autumn-born bullocks levelled at 216.8p (+2p) or £962.20 (+£21.52), with their 609 spring-born equivalents at 231.1p (-18.1p) or £691.73 (-£53.87).
Among the heifers, 658 autumn-born calves averaged 208.6p  (+3.5p) or £837.58 (-£12.03), with 516 spring-born heifers at 258p (+20.7p) or £664.10 (+50p).

TRADE for native-bred cattle was very dear throughout the Kirkcambeck sale of 1042 store cattle at C and D Auction Marts, where the average improved by £67.23 on the year.
The sale peaked at £1160 for a Limousin bullock from N Aitchinson, Kershopefoot, while native breeds hit £1120 three times – for a pair of Blue Grey bullocks from ME, TR and KM Wallace, Farney Shield; again for a pen of nine Shorthorn bullocks from FW Graham, Highfield House; and lastly for an Angus from H and M Connell, Minsca.
Galloways reached £970 for bullocks from CA and JM Hall, Whitchester.
Heifers sold to £1025 for Limousins from Allfornaught, with natives to £960 five times for Angus from Lanehead.

SOME 625 calves sold at C and D Auction Marts’ show and sale of suckled calves and store cattle, where just David Sandham, Lincs, found his champion calf in a pen from Gary Bell, Haas Side.
That was a home-bred, March-born British Blue cross bullock which went on to sell for £1520 to top the gross trade or 467.7p per kg, with a Limousin cross bullock from the same home surpassing this price at 524.1p to also realise £1520.
Heifers reached £1300 and 472.7p for British Blue crosses from Drumburn.

CALVES met the best trade of the back-end so far at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of suckled calves.
Averaging 237.34p per kg, the 186 bullocks reached 320p for a pen of 10 Charolais from James McTurk, Glenshimmerock, as well as £1240 for five Limousin bullocks from G and W Halliday, Crawthat.
Heifers (169) levelled at 219.18p and were topped by Limousins at 282.7p for six from WD Wright and Sons, Hunthills, and £1260 for a trio ofrom Crawthat.
