A GOOD show of Herefords forward for the breed society's National Calf Show at Cirencester Market, saw the oldest heifer forward, Sky High 1 Lancome Lucy, take the senior, overall female and supreme championship.

The heifer, a 15-month-old bred from the Scottish cow, Romany 1 Lucy RE L21 and by the Welsh sire, Dendor 1 Murdock, is owned by Boomer Birch and Graham Brindley, of Sky High Herefords, Weston, Staffordshire.

The duo also picked up a red rosette and the reserve junior male honours with the 10-month-old bull calf, Sky High 1 Pablo Escobar. He's by the 2016 Hereford Bull of the Year, Normanton 1 Laertes and bred from the current Female of the Year, Dendor 1 Jennefer 15.

Standing reserve to the female supreme was the senior champion, Normanton 1 Jurana 14 P612 from TD and WT Livesey, Normanton le Heath, Leicestershire. Another by Normanton 1 Laertes, she is out of Hillrow 1 Jemima B9.

Normanton Herefords also took the award for the best pair of heifer calves with TG, EI and EN Thorne, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, in reserve.

David Sapsed, of Heathbrow Simmentals, Hertfordshire, who judged the female classes, found his junior female in Lowesmoor 1 Beauty 1117 from local breeder, MJ Clark, Tetbury, Gloucestershire. This nine-month-old bred from Ford Abbey 1 Beauty, is sired by Bosa 1 Hereward.

The same home also produced the best group of three calves by the same sire, which included Beauty 1117. All three calves were by Bosa 1 Hereward. Mrs I Jennings, Ilminster, Somerset, received the runner-up award for three calves by Appleridge 1 Leo.

Cornwall breeder, Jeff Thomas, of Bollowal Ruby Red Devons, put the males through their paces and found his supreme in the 11-month-old Blakesley 1 Major, from P Cobley, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, which went on to stand reserve overall to Lancome Lucy. Major is by the three times Royal Ulster Show champion, Solpoll 1 Dynamite and bred from the successful show cow, Blakesley 1 Icicle.

Reserve senior male was another from the same stable, Kinglee 1 President, a 13-month-old bull calf out of Kinglee 1 Ebony 298 and sired by Panmure 1 Karl.

Junior male was Studdolph 1 Bale from Miss EN Thorne, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, which went on to scoop the reserve overall male honours. Her seven-month-old by Dendor 1 Ledley is bred from Studdolph 1 Vogue 495.
