A Whitebred female secured the overall breed championship and sold for the lead price of 5000gns at a joint sale of Shorthorn and Galloway cattle at Carlisle.

Sale leader was Gordon Jackson's Blackburn Milkybar, a March 2016-born heifer by Row Jim, from Blackburn, Newcastleton. This maiden, bred from Blackburn Milkyway, a Barlaes Bonus-sired female, was knocked down to MG and J Taylor, Low Arvie, Corsock, Castle Douglas.

The same home also produced a 3600gns sale for Blackburn Kitkat, a similarly aged heifer by the same sire, purchased by Jim Robertson, The Becks, Langholm. Second in her class to the champion, she is a daughter of the Lochdochart Nemo-sired Blackburn Kate.

Mr Robertson was back in buying mode, forking out the final 2200gns bid for Robert McTurk's maiden heifer, Barlaes Heather Bell 12, another March 2016-born heifer from Barlaes, Dalry. The breeding behind this transaction includes Blackburn Thumper onto a home-bred cow.

Blackburn genetics were again behind the lead priced served Whitebred, when JRF Pattinson and Son, Hotbank, Bardon Mill, Hexham, sold Hottbank Lucinda 12, again to the Taylors from Low Arvie, for 3200gns. This April 2014-born heifer is a daughter of Blackburn Marshall, out of a home-bred cow. She sold due to Blackburn Jethro.

The top priced Whitebred bull at 3200gns sold in a two-way split to J and M Walker, Raeburnfoot, Eskdalemuir, Langholm, and JM Davidson, East Deloraine, Selkirk. This was the male champion and reserve overall, Hole-of-Lyne Adam from R Telford, Hole of Lyne, Roadhead, Carlisle. A son of Blackburn Adam, this 27-month-old is out of Hole-of-Lyne Shona 3.

Pedigree black Galloways peaked at 3400gns for Tegsnose Kodiak, a 21/2-year-old bull all the way from N and S Hamill's Cheshire herd based at Pyegreave Farm, Langley, Macclesfield. A son of Blackcraig Kodiac, bred from Lady Petra of Low Arvie, by the German import, Holsten Baron S83, he was knocked down to RM McConnell, Gass Farm, Glenluce, Newton Stewart.

The female champion sold next at 3000gns to Derbyshire breeder, RP Evans, Dale Cottage Farm, Wessington. This was Messrs Wallace's Ying of Over Barskeoch, a similarly aged heifer, by Huntly Victor, out of Tansy of Over Barskeoch, from Over Barskeoch, Dalry. She changed hands served to Penninghame Windfall.

Just behind on 2900gns was the reserve female from the same home. Cathy Zest of Over Barskeoch, a 26-month-old bulling heifer also by Hunter Victor, but out of Toffee Cathy of Over Barskeoch, was purchased by H White and Son, Hartsgarth, Newcastleton.

Kirkcudbrightshire breeders, W and M McMorran and Sons, Miefield, also enjoyed a good day with two heifers at 2000gns. The first, Brownie 120 of Miefield, a Ruler of Kilnstown daughter sold with Blue Grey heifer calf at foot by High Creoch Harry, to RW and V Elliot, Blackhall, Ewes, Langholm.

Brampton-based breeders, G and C Neve and Son, Haining House, Lambley, bought the second Miefield heifer, Scottish Queen 184 of Miefield, again by Ruler of Kilnstown but with a Blue Grey bull calf at foot by Harry.

Non-pedigree Galloways peaked at £2000 for a bulling heifer by Oscar of Snowden Close from A Carruthers and Son, Peel A Hill, Bewcastle, Carlisle. The buyer was Helen Claxton, High House Farm, Newton, Stocksfield, Northumberland.
