AFTER been whittled down to six finalists which put their skills on show during the final stages of the competition at the Royal Highland Show, Andrew Neilson was crowned Scottish Association of Young Farmers' Club's inaugural Young Farmer of the Year.

Measured on expertise, knowledge and entrepreneurship, Andrew, Avondale YFC, topped the leader board to take the top prize that was announced at the Royal Bank of Scotland supper on Friday, June 22.

Andrew has already made his mark showing pedigree stock at shows, including Texels and Holsteins under the family's Brackenridge name, and was presented with his prize in front of leading representatives from the farming, food and rural industries.

Prior to the final round held at the show, all finalists had to submit improvement plans for a 500-acre mixed unit, which counted for 50% of the total score. On the day, they were interviewed on their plans, completed a quiz, completed a head-to-head stockproofing challenge and at course as well as a mystery challenge.

Commenting on the award, the association's chief executive, Penny Montgomerie, said: “The calibre of entrants and the shortlisted candidates were exceptional and a great reflection on the next generation of farming leaders. This was a robust and comprehensive assessment that tested key skills essential to running modern businesses.

"SAYFC will continue this award for forthcoming years to support and champion the best of the industry and we were disappointed not to have a female finalist and would encourage them to participate next year.”

Other finalists included Crossroads YFC's Robert Campbell, Douglas Frame and Scfott Bourman, both from Carluke YFC, Biggar YFC's David Mitchell, and David Comrie, from Bankfoot JAC.
