HALFWAY between Lanark and Lesmahagow was the place to be last Sunday, to catch the annual spectacle of the Hawksland Hill Run.

For the seventh year running, a crowd of enthusiastic amateurs, plus a few more serious competitors, gathered at Hawksland to admire each others' freewheeling contraptions – then push them off downhill to see how far they'd go.

The actual competitive aspect of the event was split across two classes, with the 'professionals' from the Scottish Cartie Association vying against each other for serious distance totals, accumulated across six runs down the hill and as far up the other side of the dip as momentum and friction would allow, while the 'novelty' builds also competed down and up the same public roads, shut off specially for the event, but with more of an eye for fun.

The real point of the day, of course, was to collect money for local charities, with this year's chosen recipients of the £500 plus raised were the Lanarkshire Epilepsy support group, the Lanarkshire branch of Armed Forces Charity SSAFA, and Lanarkshire Cat Protection.

Organised by Elaine, Stuart and Diane Sommerville, part of the Hawksland Community Events Group, the day also depended on Willie King of Hawksland, while Stevie and Sarah Rolfe of SR Cattle Services provided these photos of this exciting and entertaining occasion.
