Long-serving Mid Argyll member John Semple (centre) has been awarded the prestigious Argyll and the Islands Stalwart Award for 2024 by NFU Scotland.

The stalwart award was created in 2016 in recognition and memory of the dedication shown by Mull's Bert Leitch, Lagganulva, and Lachlan MacLean, Knock, who represented farmers and crofters both regionally and nationally for many years and passed away in 2015.

It is presented annually to either a NFUS member who has followed in their footsteps and given time and effort to the work of the Union in Argyll and the Islands or someone who has made a significant contribution to agriculture in the area.

Having worked alongside both Bert and Lachlan, John has been involved in the Mid Argyll branch for more than 25 years including six years served as chair.  He has also represented the region on many of the commodity committees at head office.

John was presented with the quaich at the recent Argyll 7 the Islands Regional Board by regional chair Duncan Macallister and Sybil MacPherson, vice regional chair, and the inaugural winner of the Stalwart award in 2017.
