John PURDIE FISHER, who farmed at Smalmstown and Howend, Longtown, in Cumbria, passed away on March 6.
He was quiet, unassuming but highly respected member of the local farming community. A forward-thinking and progressive farmer, he was a keen supporter of the live auction system, attending many sales, especially in the North of Scotland where he went to purchase store sheep.
He took great pride in all that he produced and particularly enjoyed presenting top quality prime lambs for sale at Longtown Mart. Along with his son, Robin Purdie, he also established the well-known Kirkandrews herd of pedigree Holstein dairy cows.
John is survived by his wife, Julia, three children - Joanna, Robin Purdie and Sara - and seven grand-children.
More than 500 were present at Arthuret Church, Longtown, on March 11, to pay their respects to this popular figure.
