FARMES ON 27 tractors took to the road in convoy this week to protest against plans for a waste-to-energy incinerator near Stonehouse, in South Lanarkshire.

The Dovesdale Action Group wanted to highlight its concerns about the impact of the proposed incinerator site near a busy network of roads, and the congestion that it would bring to the area both during construction and thereafter.

Protestors also wanted to air their worries about possible toxic ‘fall-out’ from the plant, and anecdotal evidence of health issues arising near similar plants elsewhere in the world.

Dumfries-based Scotgen wants to develop a ‘gasification’ plant at the Carlisle Road site, by Dovesdale, to burn waste to generate electricity. The firm said it will create 50 jobs through the plan, which has already been lodged with the local authority
