ABERFELDY AND District Junior Agricultural Club have been named as the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs’ National Club of the Year.

This award comes after the club won the Perthshire NFU Trophy for club sfficiency for last year’s efforts, and thereafter successfully convinced the judges at interview that they were worthy National winners!

The club’s leadership has thanked everyone involved in the club, as its success in winning the title was very much a team effort. Particular thanks went out to its past and present president, vice-presidents, advisory committee, top table, committee members, club members and anyone who supported its activities and events.

Credit was also due to the competition presentation prepared and presented by the past joint secretary Karen Stewart.

Club spokesman Linzi Buchanan commented that the award had rounded off a very enjoyable year during which the club had entered lots of competitions, attended events, took part in exchanges with Caithness District and Stewartry YFC, hosted a monthly slot on its local radio station (Heartland FM), appeared on television and hosted events such as the annual sheepdog trials and shearing competition, the Atholl and Breadalbane show dance, as well as its ever popular Christmas and Burns Supper dances.

Other notable achievements for Aberfeldy members in the last year included:

- Karen Stewart heading to Mid West America on the International exchange programme;

- Winning the 2009 field day;

- Cameron Pitcaithly winning Perthshire Junior Member of the Year;

- Jillian Kennedy winning overall junior at her first produce show;

- Five members taking part in with the successful Perthshire pantomime ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, while three others assisted with backstage and stewarding duties.

As a result of that event’s success, Perthshire District was able to donate £6000 to three charities – Mercy Ships, Tayside Mountain Rescue and the Tayside branch of RHET.
