Callander boys had plenty to celebrate at the Highland Show, after winning the men’s tug of war final in front of a packed out crowd around the cattle rings.
The win is particularly poignant, as it marks a successful resurrection for the club – which disbanded at the end of 2000 and was then re-established five years later, following a new surge of members. Furthermore, with a total of five Highland victories to their name, it means that they have now won the competition more times than any other club, since it began in 1981. Their last success was in 2000, and it was one of the team members from that year, Robert Paterson, who coached this year’s team to the top spot.
The squad, including Craig Black, Robin More, Adam More, Gordon McDougall, Callum Dykes, Ross Drummond and Scott Drummond, beat the Durris JAC boys in the final, with Lower Banff finishing third and Biggar, fourth.
Competition was strong in the girls section, which was eventually won by Ayr YFC’s Rachel Nelson, Alison Pate, Janice Bothwell, Elaine Montgomerie, Lauren Kennedy and Emer Macken, coached by Robin Shankland. In the final, they led against Lower Banff’s team, while Carluke finished third and Kilmaurs, fourth.
