BOTH Biggar YFC and Ayr YFC had plenty to celebrate on Saturday night at the Highland after they reigned supreme in the National tug-of-war finals held in the cattle rings in the afternoon.
A large crowd of spectators from all corners of the country, including past, present and future members of SAYFC, roared and cheered on their chosen teams and witnessed Biggar YFC’s boys team win their seventh title in succession.
The Biggar team made up of Iain Lyon, Campbell Hogg, David Paterson, Jamie Orr, Alexander Lyon and Andrew Orr won both ends of their qualifying semi-finals before doing the same in the mens’ final against fellow Lanarkshire team, Carluke YFC’s Bob Phillips, Robert Hamilton, Jack Young, Jamie Gibson, Douglas Frame and Adam Lindsay, who finished up in second.

Fife and Kinross District’s ‘A’ team – which included Davie Laird, Gavin Adam, Andy Stevenson, Rory Mckendrick, Gavin Hardie and Mike Quinn – faced slightly tougher competition against Keith YFC’s Grant Morrison, Michael Stronach, Gary Morrison, Alistair Brebner, Scott Inglis and Liam Teunion as they stood equal after two ends.
However, the Fifers’ team managed to battle it out and take the third end leaving them in third place, with the Keith lads settling for fourth.
The Ayr YFC ladies’ team of Karen Gemmell, Sheona Reid, Lauren Kennedy, Anne McHarg, Laura Rowney and Alayna Dalgleish, was another to dominate throughout the heats, never dropping an end until their first end in the final against Keith YFC ladies’ team, Gemma Bruce, Julie Bannerman, Tiggy Miller, Zoe McDonald, Louise McKenzie and Helen Willis.
The Ayrshire girls managed to bite back in the second and third ends, though, to make it an eighth win for the club in 10 years of competing at the Highland.

The Keith girls who finished second certainly made the Ayr girls work for first place

While the Keith YFC girls flew the flag for the north and finished up in second, the Clyde and Central ladies’ team made up of Eilidh Duncan, Susan Mundell, Elizabeth Bauld, Jan Duncan, Annabell More and Kate Donald managed to clinch the third prize ticket having won both ends against Fife and Kinross district’s ladies’ team, Becca Thomson, Hazel Laird, Emma Laird, Rachael Wood, Emma Sloan and Elaine Cairns.
