Pig organs could be used in life-saving transplants after a heart survived in a baboon for 2½ years.
In earlier tests, organs only lasted six months before being rejected. Genetically modified pig hearts and new drugs were used.
The research in Massachusetts, US, could ease a shortage of livers, kidneys, lungs and hearts.
The British Heart Foundation said the research was interesting, but could take years to become a reality.
