TIMES are tough in dairy circles but not for one Yorkshire producer who is making more money selling muck from his 900 cows that he gets for their milk.
David Metcalfe 51, makes up to £1000 a day turning slurry into methane gas, which is used to power the national grid.
That offsets the loss on his herd after prices fell to below 20p a litre.
The slurry also means cheaper electricity and fertiliser bills at his farm at Leyburn, north Yorks,
Said David: “It’s crazy. Milk now costs more to produce than sell. It’s a desperate situation. But at least this has given us another angle to our business.”
