WITH less than a week to go til the big day, speculation is still raging over what the public will decide in a debate that will have repercussions for decades to come – what on earth are we going to call the new pedestrian tunnel on the Royal Highland Showground?

The new structure is intended to allow both people and livestock to go about their business to the east the main grandstand without having to take turns, by the simple expedient of creating a 'high road' for the stock to pass over the ice-cream-licking throng below.

In the absence of any official naming ceremony, it seems inevitable that this new landmark will quickly acquire a nickname, decided democratically by whatever term the most people use the most often. Early support for calling it 'Jackson's Hole' has faded, with the more family-friendly 'the Udderpass' now topping most polls.

But there is still time for a wild card entry to this contest – and we won't know for sure til late next Thursday, when someone says to us: "Meet you at the ... "
