SIR, – Anent your recent front page picture regarding sheep worrying and killing, I would like to remind all farmers that wolves were involved.
Whether it is Fifi the lapdog, or Bonzo the big boisterous beast, or Meg the working collie, they are all descended from wolves. All dogs are descended from wolves.
They all carry the ancient gene for killing. When that ancient gene comes to the fore, we get sheep worrying and killing.
It is true that close connection with man since we lived with wolves in caves, has moderated the killing instinct in our modern dogs. But, ancient genes sometimes come to the fore.
The proposal to re-introduce wolves to the UK will ensure we go straight to source material.
If the wolves come, we can only expect sheep worrying and killing to enter an industrial scale.
