Dear Sir

I read from the Gleaner that he would like 'American' accuracy of weather forecasts in this country.

With the continental climate of America there are fewer parameters involved in a forecast and compared to our West European Maritime Climate, which has many more influences between land and ocean, forecasting in America will always be easier.

I was once told by a forecaster many years ago that my own area, the Moray Firth, was the worst area in the UK to forecast as it had mountains on three sides and the North Sea on one. Witness the deluge of June 6 up here caused by oragraphic lift on a north wind off the Moray Firth. 'Nowcasting' will always be the best option in our part of the planet.

The transfer of American farming techniques to the this country too will always run into the major climate differences between us.

Yours sincerely
