Sir, – Your Leader column last week was quite right to be sceptical about the UK Government's commitment to realistic prices for British farmers and food producers.

Was the meeting at No 10 a cynical attempt to divert attention away from the disastrous revelation, by James Cleverly, to a House of Lords Committee, of the downgrading of the whole of the British food supply chain via the Windsor Framework ie, 'not for EU' to be put on all food produced in Britain?

Bearing in mind:

a), There are now no checks on any food being imported into this country. Does any sane country play Russian Roulette with its nation's food supply?

b), No increase in subsidy to farming, fishing etc for 20 years, despite rocketing costs. Still the same £3.4b.

c), All trade deals done since Brexit have undermined British farming.

Is the labelling of all British produce 'not for EU' a further sinister and deliberate ploy to permanently undermine and reduce prices to producers and growers of British food? The possible implications for British agriculture are surely mind boggling!

Is it really a slight of hand to make British farmers and growers pay again for the inflation caused by Brexit and so hoodwink the consumer?

There still seems to be no admission of the inflation caused by the dramatic fall in the value of sterling on day one of Brexit and the resultant increase in cost of every subsequent import into Britain.

Any future 'consultations, re food production, by the UK Government would seem very much too little and too late.
