IT IS absolutely commendable that 90 young entrants have been aided by the Scottish Government’s Start-Up Grant scheme to the tune of £5.23m in its first year.
This just proves how many aspiring farmers there are out there. Yes, the scheme has been a victim of its own success, as ScotGov claims. But the government has every right to crow about the success of the scheme.
However, Lib-Dem MSP Mike Rumbles is also perfectly entitled to ask for more consideration to be given to those who might still apply over the next three years.
This is a scheme which should, in truth, never have a cut off point, as more and more aspiring farmers will become eligible for support as every year passes.
It is only right and proper that industry bodies and government collaborate to ensure that, Brexit or no Brexit, funding is continually made available to a scheme, which more than any other, will ensure the future of Scottish farming plc.
And, if political posturing by any individual or party helps this process along, then so be it!
