SIR, – So, Mr Mackenzie thinks that the country called Britain is noble and just – not at all like all those countries across the Channel, that kept their manufacturing industries and employed young and old, making things that can be sold and keeping people in employment!
Some, egged on by ‘the stiff upper lip’ brigade, want to leave that which has secured peace in Europe for more than 70 years and go back to imperial standards, where the rich and the aristocracy rule supreme; a society were we have to ‘kow tow’ and move aside for the rich!
As a resident of the Outer Hebrides, money that has come from Europe has pulled our way of life forward by providing modern ferries, and 20th century roads, piers, and bridges. If this was to be provided by the coffers of Whitehall, we would have to do with a side-loading ferry!
Yet people have short memories. They tend to listen to the super rich that hope to make more money by leaving.
They are not putting forward a case for you or me, but for themselves. They say it will be good for the country, but if they love this country so much why are they stashing money in the British Virgin Isles to avoid tax.
They say that this country pays more into the EU than we get out. The front players must get a lot of money from our economy when they can stash millions overseas, as the Panama Papers have shown.
I am in my twilight years, so it makes not one iota of a difference to me. But what about the younger generation?
Do they want the same as we got – peace? Instead, they get a country that has a debt burden of £600bn that depends on other foreign investors to provide wealth from the stock exchange.
According to a Wall Street stockbroker, one-third of the world’s money passes through London and the other two-thirds passes through Wall Street.
He has speculated that if Britain left the EU, it would only take a few days for China, or Russia or India to wipe out London. At present it has protection from a 500m population market against 60m market that has no manufacturing base.
If the City of London was wiped out, or wounded, we would have no economy. Where would the money come to replace the billions of European money that supports our subsidy payment?
We would barely be better than a third world country. Most of the foreign manufacturing bases would move to the continent and millions would be out of work! Where would the money come from to pay social payments?
There would be wailing and gnashing of teeth, and where would Farage, Boris, Gove, and Duncan-Smith be but in luxury in some exotic place!
How true: Every dog barks for his own benefit!
