"I was extremely disappointed that your article ‘Sheep scheme needs fixed’ did not include the facts of the situation regarding the timescale for making payments under the new Upland Sheep Support Scheme.

We are working hard to make all the sheep scheme payments as quickly as possible, and expect to make them this month. However, as NFU Scotland are well aware, the Scottish Government has been wholly focused on making as many BPS/ Greening payments as possible by the end of June.

As we have advised on at least two occasions, it has for some time been the Scottish Government’s intention to commence sheep payments in July. Until now, the NFUS had told us they agreed with this prioritisation of work, given the circumstances.

However, we will take on board what they are now saying about the timetable. We will also consider their proposed changes to the scheme carefully, although it should be noted that the rules of the scheme – which was introduced at their request – were discussed with them in detail in advance.

I would also point out that I confirmed this timescale in my speech at the Quality Meat Scotland breakfast at the Royal Highland Show, an event which was attended by NFUS, National Sheep Association and The Scottish Farmer."
