SIR, – Now that Angus McCall has become an owner/occupier through purchasing his previously tenanted farm (The SF, August 20), I wonder if he has thought about how the next generation of farmers are going to get onto the farming ladder.
If many other tenant farmers are going to be given the opportunity to purchase their farms, as seems likely following recent legislation, there will be even fewer farms available to rent than there are now, which will simply reduce the opportunity for young people to become farmers.
When Mr McCall retires from farming, perhaps he will be prepared to let his farm, or sell it with vacant possession at a discounted price, to a new entrant to the industry?
