SIR - On reading your most interesting report on August 26. My first job as a herdsman in charge of the breeding herd at Aswanley Mains, Glass, Huntly, belonging to JA Inglely, Invermarkie Home Farm, who then owned Rhidorroch Estate, at Ullapool, where he had a pure Highland herd, all young stock come to Aswanley Mains for overwintering.
All Highland heifers were retained for breeding to a Shorthorn bull, bred at Dunscroft, Gartly, Huntly, by JC Innes, a renowned herd at the time.
All progeny were sold at Huntly Mart as weaned calves where we took many of the top prizes and prices.
Surplus heifers met an exceptional trade, even then, for replacement cows.
Temperament, hardiness, milk and beef values were all in their favour. An all round typical hill cow.
