SIR, – Having attended Campbeltown Show last month, I would like to congratulate the Kintyre Show committee for the tent they had set up containing many items of memorabilia, photos, newspaper cuttings etc taken from many previous shows.
This one being the 150th, I was especially taken with the two catalogues of 1956 and 1958 both of the month of June and showing the outside front cover (top half 'The Kintyre Agricultural Society Annual Show') and (bottom half 'The Highland Mart AM Wright Ltd, Cattle Market, Glasgow').
In March of 1956, I left school at the age of 15 and joined AM Wright Ltd, remaining for nearly 12 years where I was an auctioneer for part of that period.
When the mart closed its doors in August 1968 to make way for a big new abattoir, McDonald Fraser and Co had been the only other firm still operating there.
Over the years 1860 to 1968, 23 firms had conducted business as auctioneers, with at one time 11 operating, each taking their turn of the several auction rings.
AM Wright Ltd had operated in Glasgow from 1885.
