SIR, – It was with dismay that we read Angus McCall’s letter, he replied ‘reluctantly’ to criticism of his purchase of his tenanted farm – he was not so ‘reluctant’ to speak publicly when he took on the role of chairperson of the STFA
Back the, he took a stance against tenants’ right to buy in the recent land reform consultation with the Scottish Government.
He was a tenant for the past ‘half century’, which is a mere drop in the ocean for some of the tenants he is representing.
It is noted that Mr McCall then goes on to contradict his opposition to the right to buy when he says purchasing his farm was ‘a no brainer ... securing a better future for the next generation’. Is that not what opening up the opportunity for the right to buy is all about?
We hope that in any future discussions around land reform Mr McCall will now take the stance of supporting the opportunity for the rest of the traditional tenants to have the right to buy their land.
