SIR, – whilst I would readily agree that Dr Dawson (The SF, January 7) knows a lot more about the agronomy of eastern Europe and plant protection products than I do, I would be more confident about what he writes if he didn’t make silly mistakes about who was president before and during the times of the Castro regime.
It was Eisenhower who was president when Batista was overthrown (Roosevelt died some 14 years previously) and he endorsed the now infamous Bay of Pigs fiasco (which was carried out under his successor Kennedy – and failed, as they did not apply the air and naval resources originally planned).
‘One swallow does not a summer make’ is a tried and tested proverb and in our case last summer the swallows were late and in smaller numbers.
Dr Dawson’s confidence in food supply and climate change may be a bit misplaced, as is the speculation from all sides about how the incoming Trump administration will operate.
What Mr Trump and his associates felt required to say in order to get elected may be markedly different from what the administration can deliver. Indeed, it would be very surprising to be otherwise, given the checks and balances of the USA constitution.
We will just have to wait and see, even though the media always wants to have the ‘news’ before it has even happened.
