Sir, – In recent weeks the 'Farmer’s view' column, writers have criticised the new ScotMoves system, suggesting that there will be increased bureaucracy.
But there is no new burden being imposed on cattle farmers. We have been responsible for recording ear numbers of cattle moved under the 'Linked Holdings' system in our own herd records since the system started.
The new ScotMoves will make it easier for farmers to comply and the system meets EU requirements. So win, win.
It is an extra bonus that movement records will be immediately available in the event of a disease outbreak instead of officials trying to decipher hand-written records on farm.
The Scot Gov working group was well represented by industry stakeholders and NFUS were not asleep on this issue – they were well represented at all meetings of the working group!
I believe that ScotMoves is a step forward for the cattle industry which will still have to comply with EU regulations if we want to export after Brexit.
