SCOTTISH cattle were to the fore at the recent Livestock Event held at the NEC, in Birmingham, when to cows from Scottish exhibitors took the supreme and reserve supreme accolades.
Tapped forward as inter-breed champion by judge, Ashley Fleming, from Downpatrick, was the red and white leader, Horseclose Joanne from father and son team, James and Daniel McGarva, from Annan, Dumfries, who were making their debut at the event. This fifth calver – which was prepped by the Young Ayrshire Breeders show team and turned out by Shaun Rennie – is by Kain and out of Muirston Joanna 16. She was on her first outing of the season having calved down in January and was shown giving 36kg daily at 4.81% BF and 3.01% P.
Taking the reserve title was the leader of the National Ayrshire Show, Cuthill Towers Crown Ray from the Lawrie family – Arthus, Susan, David and James – from Milnathort, Kinross. Another fifth calver, she calved down in May and is currently giving 50kg at 4.0% BF and 3.2% P. The breeding here includes Ardmore Crown Napier on to Cuthill Towers Ray 26.
Stranraer-based Robert and Shiela McColm were also in the tickets when their Soulseat Jublend Beatrice led the Brown Swiss National Show. She is no stranger to the Livestock Event, having won her section for the last three years and taking the inter-breed last year. She calved her fifth eight weeks previously and is yielding 36kg daily
