IT was very much a Ladies Day at Caithness County Show, staged this year at Thurso, with the event celebrating its 175th anniversary and all female judges to commemorate the event.
They were all on form too, with the top two winners from Latheron Show continuing on their winning ways, to take the lead two awards at Caithness.
For the second consecutive week, Mark and Debbie Munro’s commercial cattle champion, Kiss My … was crowned supreme overall. Similarly, the reserve overall, was the inter-breed sheep winner, a Texel ewe from Charles and Isobel Angus, which scooped the same award at Latheron.
Following the Texel in the sheep lines to take the runner-up was the lead North Country Cheviot, a tup lamb shown by Jonnie Campbell of DN Campbell and Sons, Bardnaclavan, Westfield.
The usual strong sheep section saw another big win for the commercial champions from regular winners, William Barnetson and sons, James and William, Lynegar, Watten. This year they not only won their section but also the inter-breed group honours with a home-bred one-crop Texel cross Half-bred ewe paraded with March-born Suffolk cross ewe lambs.
Leading the pure groups, was a trio of park-type Cheviots from John Polson, Smerlie.
Cattle judges, Wendy Hunter, Newbigging, and Tracey Nicoll, Balthayock, eventually found their reserve supreme in the pedigree leader, after retired auctioneer Ian Thomson, had to be brought in as umpire. This was the previously unshown Charolais heifer, Shebster Lucy, a 14-month-old shown by 12-year-old Lauren Oag, Brims Mains, Forss.
