A PACKED progeny show of Bluefaced Leicesters at Penrith, saw two rings running for the traditional and crossing types with large numbers competing in both.

Drew Brown, Drumhumphry, Corsock, was the main man in the traditional ring and found his champion and reserve in sheep from Scott and Clare Thomason’s Piel View flock, from The Lodge, Barrow-in-Furness.

Their winner was a previously unshown ewe lamb by the H4 Auchry, bought out of Builth last year, out of a ewe by F9 Myfrian.

Notably, their male champion and reserve overall, a tup lamb was the same way bred.

Stephen Crozier, who owns the Watersyke flock, just outside Lockerbie, picked up the reserve female honours with a gimmer, while the equivalent amongst the males was taken by a tup lamb from 21-year-old Stuart Nelson, who established his flock near Lanark, a couple of years ago.

There was more success for Scotland, when Matt and Elaine Drummond, Cassington, Maybole, exhibited the champion progeny group. Their trio comprised gimmer daughters of Woodcroft F4, a Cernyw D1 son bought at Carlisle in 2013.

Stuart Nelson was back among the tickets for his fledgling flock, which runs to 17 ewes, when he took the reserve progeny group with three tup lambs by the D5 Elian, making it a day to remember for this young breeder.

In the crossing ring, judge, Richard Thomas of the Tanhouse flock, tapped out a gimmer from the Porter family’s Riddings flock, Richmond, as the leader.

She is by the £14,000 Midlock Domino, which the Porters share with the Asby Hall flock. Riddings also secured the progeny group with a trio of ewes by the same sire.

Runner-up for the crossing types was a home-bred shearling ram from Matt Drummond’s Cassington X flock. Midlock genetics were again behind this tup which stood second in his class at Highland, with the sire being Midlock Y1, out of a ewe with Lunesdale and Highberries bloodlines.

Mr Drummond was also reserve female with a gimmer bought from Michael James’ Duhonw flock, with the runner-up ticket amongst the males going to a tup lamb from Messrs Pedley Yore House, Hawes. He is by the G2 SP Dalpeddar, bought at Hawes.

Tups lambs from the same flock, this time by H2 Drimsynie, a son of the £15,000 Midlock Knight Rider bought in Hawes, also triumphed to win the reserve award in the crossing progeny group.

A fiercely contested Mule section, which saw some 25 pairs of lambs out, saw the lead award won by Ron and Fran Wilson, Appleby, with the singles led by an entry from Andrew Nicholson.

Supreme, however, was a gimmer bred by Neil Marston, but shown by Ron and Fran Wilson. She already boasts championship wins at the Highland and the Great Yorkshire Shows.

The progeny section was won by John Smith Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle, with three ewe lambs by the £4000 Midlock G6, a son of E1 Hewgill, which he shares with Fred and Ruth Dinsdale, Harkerside. Reserve in this section was Martyn Archer, who won the Blackface Mule section with lambs by Highberries Highlander, a tup owned with his breeder, Neil Marston.
