THE SUN shone on Appin Show and good fortune on the two Douglases, senior and junior, from Tyree, Benderloch, last weekend.

They won the beef championship with their black spring-born Limousin cross heifer, Tasty Ribs, before going on to be made show champion of champions.

Douglas jnr also did well in the pure-bred sheep section, taking reserve with a Texel ewe, beaten only by a sturdy two-shear High Crewburn-bred Texel tup shown by Donnie MacCorquodale jnr, from Achnaba.

The big Blackface section was won by James Henry Weir, Invernahyle, who had family showing his sheep while he was attending a dog trial further south. His success came for a gimmer, by a home-bred son of a £1600 Dyke and he was also section reserve with a shearling tup which had been bought off Aitkenhead for £700 as a lamb.

Despite conflicting shows further south, Highland cattle breeders put on a grand display of stock again, with the honours going to Sydney and Maureen O'Hara's local Cnoc fold, with stockman, Iain McKay showing the veteran eight-year-old cow, Cannach 27 of Achnacloich, to winning effect.

The new site in the village of Appin proved a big success with visitors afforded parking on hard standing and a field which stood up well to a deluge the day before the show.
