HONEY DIME earned every cent of her keep when she won the LiveScot overall beef championship for owner, Wilson Peters, Cuilt Farmhouse, Monzie, Crieff.
She’s been a regular winner for him since being bought out of the Monzie herd after being champion at Caledonian Marts’ spring show and sale. She was section champion and reserve overall beef at Perth, reserve champion at Kirriemuir and most recently, was reserve supreme at the AgriExpo show at Carlisle.
Giving Wilson his second championship – he last won in 2013 with Needing TLC – was an April, 2015-born 630kg heavy heifer by the Monzie stock bull, the 14,000gns Charolais, Carwood Elgin, out of a Limousin cross dam, one of 200 cows that he manages at Monzie.
Later, the champion made £4900 to the buyer of last year’s champion, Tony Kitson, Yarm, N Yorks. Wilson donated half of the money over the £4000 mark to the Doreen Cormack stem cell fund.
Reserve in the final line-up was the top steer, the heavy bullock, Red Alert, from Neil Slack, Plum Tree House, Newby, Penrith.
This is another successful show animal, having been the Kings Cup winner (home-bred) and reserve steer at the recent Smithfield Festival, plus best home-bred and Limousin cross champion at the recent English National.
Red Alert is by the imported Limousin bull, Rossignol and out of one of just 20 cows that Neil keeps, a Limousin cross. He later made £2000 to J and H Cairns, butchers, Law, Carluke.
Following Honey Dime all the way through the class to be reserve supreme heavy heifer and reserve overall heifer was husband and wife team, Stewart and Lynsey Bett, Castleton, Airth, with Rio.
Bred by the Scottish National Fatstock Club chairman, Hugh Dunlop, from Holehouse, Ochiltree, she’s by Hugh’s home-bred Charolais stock bull, Doonvalley Harry, and out of a Limousin cross dam.
The same home also had the light heifer champion, Copacobana, another Charolais cross which was bred by Stuart Fortheringham, Ballinloan. She’s by Inverlochy Freddie, out of a Limousin cross cow and was bought for £2800 at the Thainstone Spectacular sale in September – and she was heading to contest the Welsh Winter Fair immediately after the Lanark event.
The reserve light heifer champion was from father and son Robert and Craig Ferguson, Riverdale, Gilmourton, Strathaven. Their Cocky is a Charolais cross which had been bred at Dippen and bought at the Cally show and sale, where it had been second to the champion in its class.
From the light steer section, the champion was George and Aileen McFadzean’s first time out The Special One. This is the first continental cross shown by them for ‘hundreds of years’ and is by the 9000gns Limousin herd sire, Maraiscote Galaxy and out of a British Blue cross dam.
The same class also provided the reserve light steer, Cammie Boy, named after Jim and Catherine McKechnie’s grandson, from France Farm, Gartocharn.
This is a home-bred steer bred out of another highly successful show animal, Luck’s a Fortune and by the Limousin sire, Emslies Galileo.
The same position amongst the heavy steers was taken by John and Leslie Craik’s Angus, a Limousin cross by Shian Hijack, from Waterside, Haugh of Urr, Castle Douglas.
This is another home-bred animal bred out of a pure Limousin dam and which had been shown through the summer by the Craiks. That meant he went on to win the best pure-bred animal in the show, beating the best pure-bred native, which was the Galloway steer, Mummy’s Boy, shown by Jennifer Hyslop, Balluskie, Girvan.
