IT was very much a family affair amongst the grain with the Galbraiths, who farm 800 acres of cereals at Upper Kinneil, Linlithgow, dominating the leader board.

Father Sandy first won the overall championship with a sample of Concerto spring barley, with sons, Jack (8) and James (10), taking champion and reserve amongst the juniors, respectively. Jack's winning sample was Myriad winter wheat.

Regular potato winner, Willie Chapman, Spylaw, West Linton, had another good year too, winning his second consecutive overall here and 17th Scottish National Fat Stock Club supreme potato award in total. Mr Chapman, who now grows less than 100 acres of potatoes to sell at the door, triumphed this year with six ware tubers of the relatively new variety, Isle of Jura, which a large, good eating quality potato that keeps well, according to Mr Chapman.

In contrast to previous years which have seen pit silage win the top awards in the grass silage section, this year's winner was baled round bale silage intended for pedigree Texel sheep. Cut on May 20, this sample from Fred Murray, East Horton, Wooler, who was returning to the event after a five-year absence, is thought to have a dry matter of at least 30%. It will be fed to the family's Glendale Texel flock.
