A SINGLE sow from local producer Mark Strachan, West Balquhain, Inverurie, was crowned supreme pig for the first of the Aberdeen Christmas Classic championships, at Thainstone.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Adam Cheale from Cheale Meats, Essex, which buys 10,000 cull sows every year from the area, said the fall in the value of sterling had boosted the export trade and as a result values, with prices doubling on the year from 23p per live kg to 50p at present.

He is also hopeful prices will remain firm in the next year despite the uncertainty caused by Brexit.
