CATTLE from Newton of Logierait dominated the show and sale of exhibition cattle at the Royal Northern Spring Show when the champion from father and son duo, John and Craig Robertson set a new Spring Show record of £9000.

With a large crowd present to watch the show in the exhibition centre, the buzz continued through to the sale ring where a large contingent of buyers were willing to splash the cash for the best of the calves on offer.

Setting the trade alight to double the Newton of Logierait team’s previous best price received here was their supreme champion, a beast that was fancied by many ahead of the sale having not made it to the Thainstone Spectacular last back-end. She is one of the first crop of calves sired by new stock sire Calogale Irresistible, a 6500gns purchase at Carlisle, this unnamed heifer made her debut to the show ring one to remember. Bred out of a former show heifer, this heifer was knocked down to Bill Stewart, of Greenfold, Bridge of Marnoch, Huntly, buying on behalf of a telephone bidder.

“She was full of style, very correct and balanced, with a leg in each corner and the potential to go on and do very well,” said judge Lin Pidsley, of Upton Ley, Devon, who produces show calves as well as a small herd of pedigree Limousins.

The big prices kept on coming for John and Craig, as their next best at £6050 came for a second prize heifer by the same sire but this time out of another Limousin cross. This 10-month-old caused another bidding war but it was show calf and Limousin cattle producers from Devon, Mike and Melanie Alford, who secured her for £6050.

Knocked down for £3000 to John Lumgair, East Idvies, Letham, was a red ticket holder from Newton of Logierait, this one a heifer bred by Chris Dick, Upper Taylorton. This 13-month-old daughter of Lodge Hugo out of a British Blue cow, tipped the scales at 482kg.

Newton of Logierait sold another for £2600 to Blair Duffton, Bogie Street, Huntly, with that price matched by a Limousin cross heifer from Monzie Farms, Gilmerton, Crieff, which sold to D Blair and Son, Littleinch, Balmerino, Newport on Tay.
