HEADING up the Stirling spring show and sale of calves at Caledonian Marts was the champion from the open section in the shape of a Charolais cross heifer from Stewart Bett and Lynsey McKay.

Their October 2015-born daughter of Inverlochy Ferdie named Copacabana, was bought at the Thainstone Spectacular from Stuart Fotheringham, Ballinloan, and stood lightweight heifer champion at LiveScot last November. She tipped the scales at 555kg and was knocked down to the Thomson family, Lammerview, for the top price of £2100.

Next in the trade stakes at £1800 was the top price entry from the Clyde and Central Young Farmers’ calf rally, a Limousin cross heifer from Andrew Weir. Originally bred by Brian Harper, Greenwells, and bought at LiveScot, she placed second in her class to the YF champion and sold to Keith Commercials.

The YF champion from John and James Graham followed close behind on £1700 when sold to Fraser McNicoll. Sired by a Lodge bull, That’s My Girl was bought from Robert Currie, Low Dunasherry, when she stood champion at Oban in December.

Making £1650 when snapped up by George Harvey was a third prize heifer from Monzie Farms. She is by the Anside Hawkeye bull that also sired a £2600 heifer sold at the Spring Show.

Other ticket winners included the reserve in the open section, a Limousin cross from Hugh Dunlop, which sold to Alasdair Paterson for £1450, as well as Stephanie Dick’s reserve YF champion, a Limousin cross called Calamity Jane which sold to David and William Moir for £1350.
