AYRSHIRE Association of Young Farmers Clubs’ Rally dairy calf competition was warmly welcomed by Kilmaurs Farmers Society at its 114th annual show, which also hosted the Ayrshire tug-of-war competition. 

In total, 38 rally calves were shown, while five boys’ teams and three girls’ teams pulled in the tug-o-war. 

In the show section, it was Newlands Farm’s Hugh Montgomerie’s fifth calver, Kilmaurs Admiral Alicia, which was placed first in the dairy section, while Billy Scott, of Shacklehill, Mossblown, saw his Clauchlands Trisha 26, being placed reserve. 

The dairy calf section saw Hugh’s son, Cameron, being placed overall champion, while Euan Mitchell, of Grougar Mains, Kilmarnock, was reserve. 

Sean Kennedy, of Newpark Farm, Coalhall, led the beef section with his seven-month-old Limousin heifer, Swarovski, while Thomas Smith, showing for Fleminghill Farm, Kilmarnock, was placed second with Honey G, a 12-month-old Limousin heifer. 

Now in its second year, the Clydesdale section saw a good turnout, with Auchengree Clydesdales’ Auchengree Ariana being placed champion, while Anvilside Farm’s Miss H Steel’s Bruno was placed in reserve. 

Ross Limond, of Ayr and District YFC, was announced champion in the rally dairy calf championship, and Jennifer Veitch, of Mauchline YFC, was placed in reserve. Ayr and District YFC won both the boys’ and girls’ tug-o-war competition.

LEADING awards:

Holstein Friesian (Judge: Miss A Laird, Blyth Farm, Blyth Bridge). Champion — J and H Montgomerie, Newlands, Kilmaurs, with Kilmaurs Admiral Alicia, which was champion here last year. Sired by Overside Admiral and out of a previous Kilmaurs Alicia, she calved her fifth in March, and is producing 50 litres of milk per day. Reserve — W Scott, Shacklehill, Mossblown, with Clauchlands Trisha 26, by Altaghost. She was recently classified VG85 and was purchased when Mr Scott judged the Border and Lakeland Club Sale in February, where she was part of the Clauchlands reduction sale. She is giving 34kg at present. Two or three-year-old quey in milk — W Scott. Dairy cow in milk, group, bred — J and H Montgomerie.

Champion — S Kennedy, Newpark, Coalhall, with Swarovski, a seven-month-old Limousin heifer by Sander’s Iceman, out of a Blue cross cow. She was purchased from W Thompson and Son. Reserve — T Smith, showing for Fleminghill, Kilmarnock, with Honey G, a 12-month-old Limousin cross heifer, by a Limousin bull, out of a Blue cross cow. She was purchased from Tormitchell, Girvan, and will next be shown at the Ayrshire Rally.

Clydesdales (Judge: D McGill, Kennels Cottage, Newark Estate, Alloway).

Champion – Auchengree Clydesdales, Eastbank Farm, Lenzie, with Auchengree Ariana. This home-bred yearling filly is by Dillars Top Gun and out of the Roeshall Magnum-sired mare, Roeshall Saffron. Ariana was first prize foal at the Royal Highland last year. Reserve – Miss H Steel, Anvilside Farm, Bridge of Weir, with Bruno. This Rashillhouse Frewman-sired gelding was reserve champion last year at Stewarton. Gelding – Miss H Steel. Mare – G Robertson, Shewalton, Kilwinning. Yearling or two-year-old colt – W Drummond, Broadyards, Craigie. Yearling or two-year-old filly, pair – Auchengree Clydesdales. Young Handler – Harry West, Red House, Osgodby, Lincolnshire.
