A GOOD day out was had by all at Ayr, where a stylish English-bred Jersey cow, owned by three Irish herds and shown by a Scotsman, ruled supreme to take the coveted overall champion of champions.
Despite the wet weather forecast, a relatively dry day saw the popular Jersey cow, Bluegrass Vindications Harp, a third calver in milk owned by Ashley and Lyndsey Fleming; John Henning and Keith Agnew, all from Northern Ireland, first take the lead dairy honours and then the supreme, when shown by Michael Yates, Castle Douglas.
No stranger to the limelight, this Vindication CJCC daughter boasts three consecutive breed championship wins at the Borderway UK Dairy Expo as well as the Jersey red, white and blue honours at the Highland, last year.

The Scottish Farmer:

Bluegrass Vindications Harp

Bred by Barry, Jenny and Claire Daw, from Hertfordshire, and bought at the Red Ribbons sale for 11,000gns, Harp is out of Bluegrass Barbers Harpist and will next be shown at the Highland.
For the supreme, she first beat off strong competition to win the inter-breed dairy title ahead of the Holstein leader and then the overall champion of champions ahead of the top beef, sheep and Clydesdale winners.
"The Jersey is the most correct of all the dairy champions. She is an exact model of what a Jersey should be, boasting the widest and highest rear udder, as well as all the other breed characteristics," said the overall dairy judge, Johnny Cousar, pointing out that it was a close decision between her and the Holstein leader from Robert Veitch's Ve-tech herd from Tarbolton.
Holsteins also won the inter-breed dairy group of four ahead of an Ayrshire quartet.
For the supreme overall, Inter-breed judges, Jimmy Warnock (sheep); Glen Welsh (beef) and the Clydesdale judge, Andrew Whetton, awarded the Jersey a massive 27 points, while the reserve overall, was presented to the supreme beef animal, an extremely muscly British Blue bull from Kevin Watret, Annan, which with the inclusion of the dairy judge's score totalled 23.

The Scottish Farmer:

Solway View Kelvin

His show stopper, Solway View Kelvin, a two-year-old award wining show bull, is by Solway View Firecracker and was paraded by stockman Ali Jackson, while Mr Watret was competing in the North West 200 motorbike races, where his bike came second.
Securing a third inter-breed beef title here for the herd which runs alongside pedigree Limousins, was a two-year-old ET son of the show winning bull Solway View Firecracker, bred from Bringlee Evadine. Kelvin will be sold today (Saturday) at the breed sale at Carlisle.
There were more celebrations to come in the main ring, when the overall beef judge, Glen Welsh, presented the inter-breed group of three to the commercials. This trio comprised three red Limousins to include the reserve from James Hodge, Dykes Farm and two first prize steers, from Alastair and Rena Paterson, Low Three Mark and Andrew Wyllie, Dalrymple.

The blue and white sash was given to a trio of Limousins to include a bull from Norman Cruickshanks, Cleghorn, and two females from Jamie Smith, Old Greentowers Farm.
A cracking line-up of sheep to include a new Ryeland section, saw the best from the Border Leicester breed take the inter-breed honours for Mary Laidlaw, Galston. Her four-crop ewe on her show debut is by Kininmonth Kiwi.

The Scottish Farmer:

Supreme sheep from Mary Laidlaw

Inter-breed sheep judge, Jimmy Warnock found his reserve overall in the any other continental champion, a Bleu Du Maine ewe from Laine Daff, Uplawmoor. Her Greenside Melody, a two-crop bred from a top show winning female, was champion at Neilston.
Suffolks from young Gregor Hiddleston, Rigghead, Dumfries, lifted the supreme group of three with Charollais from Russell Gray, Langside, winning the reserve.
This year's bumper section of 80 dairy cattle forward for four sections, saw Robert Veitch's third calver in milk, Boclair Gold Barbara 2, first take the Holstein honours and then the reserve overall dairy title. Bought privately from Jack and David Brewster, this huge cow boasts several top wins to her credit to include Ayr, the Highland and AgriScot. A daughter of Boclair Goldwyn, she calved in January and is giving 52litres per day.
