ONE of the best ever shows of Holstein and Ayrshire cattle seen at Ingliston for a good number of years, saw the top two from their sections secure the supreme champion and reserve overall.

Inter-breed judge, John Jamieson, Dumfries, was most impressed by the line-up of champions forward, but he said his top two, were ‘two special individuals and two super examples of the breed.’

Presenting the top award to the Holstein, Newbirks Jazz, from Lancashire breeders, Robert and Elaine Butterfield, Mr Jamieson, said: “This is a beautiful third calver with everything that you would look for in a modern dairy cow in the way she carries herself and her veination throughout. She really catches the eye.”

He was equally taken with his choice of reserve – the Ayrshire leader from first time exhibitors, Mungo and Fiona Bryson, sons, Alistair and Callum and daughter, Lauren, Whiteflat, Mauchline. Their show stopper, Changue Martha 49 Ex95, is a fifth calver bought privately from Robert Stevenson.

The Holstein breed also secured the junior title, with Wayne Stead and Evening Holsteins’ Riverdane Ashlyn’s Gold, also being in the winning inter-breed group of four. The three other members of the winning quartet were Blythbridge Holsteins’ La Croisiere Infinity; the champion; and Brian Yates’ Logan Sid Edie.

That latter cow also appeared in the winning progeny group of three, all daughters of Pinetree Sid, teaming up with Blythbridge Holsteins’ Blythbridge Sid Jackie and Jack and David Brewster’s Boclair Sid Hope.

Reserve inter-breed junior was the red and white Holstein heifer, Eastford Atomium Kiwi Red, a Gen-I-Beq Atomium daughter from Eastford Holsteins.

The runner-up group of four were Ayrshires, comprising of Mungo Bryson’s Changue Martha 49; John Adamson’s Swaites Bubles 5; Arthur and Susan Lawrie’s Cuthill Towers El Pas Easy Lady; and Michael Howie’s Morwick Kirsty 9.
