A GOOD show of stock and their owners’ cheery dispositions brightened up an otherwise dreich day at Kirriemuir Show, which was celebrating its 140th anniversary.

The wandering champion of champions title was awarded to the overall cattle winner this year, which was Wilson Peters’ British Blue cross heifer, Miss Tees. She was picking up her sixth tri-colour of the year, and secured Wilson his 10th commercial title and fourth inter-breed ticket at Kirrie in the last 15 years.

In reserve to her, as picked out by Jock Robertson, Newton of Logierait, was the Limousin leader, Wylie’s Melody. This 17-month-old Ampertaine Gigolo daughter from Lesley Wylie has also been in the tickets this year and stood champion at Alyth and Fettercairn shows.

Mr Robertson also picked out the Limousin duo from Lesley and her father, Willie McLaren as pairs champion with two Simmentals from Heather Duff’s Pitmudie herd in reserve. Simmentals ruled the groups of three though, with a trio from Gerald, Morag and Doug Smith’s Drumsleed herd in the top spot followed by another three Simmentals from Heather Duff.

Across in the sheep lines it was the winner of the Beltex section, Ian Reid’s two-crop ewe named Aviemore Wilma, that won the inter-breed on a points basis. This was her first outing this year but she did pick up the championship at Perth Show in 2016.

Taking the reserve was a Blackie gimmer brought out by Billy Brady on behalf of Tay and Torridon Estate, North Amulree. This daughter of a £10,000 Aitkenhead was making her show debut.

In the Clydesdale section the Greenhill family’s Tulloes Blossom followed on from her wins Angus and Alyth shows to claim the championship. This two-year-old filly is by Collessie Stepping Stone.

Heading up the horse entry was an eight-year-old hunter, The Ultimate Legacy, from Pam and Emily Simpson while in reserve was Lynnanne Cameron and Alison Walker’s four-year-old Welsh section C mare, Passford Pollyanna.
