ROBERT and Elaine Butterfield’s top Holstein show cow, Newbirk Jazz 1584, went one step better than her breed title and reserve inter-breed at the 2016 Yorkshire, to lift the supreme dairy honours at last week’s Harrogate event.

This Comestar Laungaurd Ex93-classified third calver in milk from the 150-cow Ingleview herd from Bentham, was bought from the Lawson family, Otley, as a heifer in milk and has since then triumphed to win several championships to include the inter-breed dairy award at the Highland, three weeks previously and the reserve at the European Championships, Colmar, last year. Calved in April, and giving 63kg per day, she was also providing the Butterfields with their fourth inter-breed championship at the Great Yorkshire.

The Butterfields also triumphed to take the inter-breed pairs honours, with Jazz and their home-bred cow, Ingleview Goldsun Erma Ex92.

Last year’s inter-breed winners, Ian and Mary Collins, who run the Chruchroyd Dairy Shorthorn herd from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, this time had to settle with the reserve overall dairy title, with VG88 second calver, Churchroyd Bronte Wildeyes 46. Champion at Otley Show earlier in the season, this Churchroyd Goldwyn daughter bred from a home-bred Ex-classified cow, was paraded giving 42litres per day, having calved in May. She gave 7841litres in her first.

The same two breeds came up trumps in the groups of five, with Holsteins taking the tri-colour and Dairy Shorthorns the runner-up.

The Baynes family – David, Shirley, Richard and Paul – from Hexham, who run 60 Ayrshires and a similar amount of Dairy Shorthorn, were also in the tickets, winning the top two tickets amongst the Ayrshires, along with reserve inter-breed heifer honours.

Their show stopper was the January-calved heifer, Marleycote Sea Lily 23, a De-La Plaine Prime daughter out of the former heifer champion winner here, Marleycote Sea Lily 14. Third at the UK Dairy Expo, at Carlisle, in March, she was also champion and inter-breed dairy at Northumberland, in May. She is giving 32kg per day and is projected at 7000litres.

The Baynes also scooped the reserve Ayrshire honours with the Ex93 Marleycote Brown Nell, by Palmyre Tri-Star Burdette. This fourth calver is also bred from a former champion winner here and last year scooped the breed honours at the South West Scotland Dairy Show. She calved in September and is giving 36litres.

Inter-breed heifer champion was the reserve Holstein, Littlebridge Goldchip Honey, which also bagged the bred championship with Lizzy Miles, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, at the helm. Champion at the North Yorkshire County Show, earlier in the year, she is bred from the Ex93 Littlebridge Shottle Honey 2, and is sired by Mr Chassity Gold Chip.

Matthew Richardson brought out the lead Jersey, Kempbrook Tequila Jillian, a September 2013-born third calver by Tower Vue Prime Tequila, for the Richardson family from Doncaster. She was bought at the Kempbrook dispersal as a calf.

Reserve was the Saxby family’s Saxown Miles Angel 2, a December 2012-born cow in milk.

The champion Jersey and Miss R Stapelton's intermediate cow, Aireburn Tequila Cash, took the reserve inter-breed pairs.
